Princess Diana at hospice

Our history

A legacy of care and community

The Mary Stevens Hospice began with one vision: to create a place where people facing life-limiting illnesses could receive specialist palliative and end-of-life care. From those beginnings in 1991 to the thriving, multi-service hospice we are today, our story has always been about people: the patients we care for, the loved ones we support, and the community that sustains us.

How it all began...

When the doors were opened in 1991 by HRH The Princess of Wales, our mission was simple - to provide free, specialist palliative and end-of-life care for those living with life-limiting illness. That mission has never changed, though our reach has grown. Today, we serve thousands of people across Dudley and surrounding areas, offering care that listens and comforts.

Decades of growth, guided by the same heart

From a small hospice with a handful of staff, The Mary Stevens Hospice has grown into a leading centre for specialist palliative and end-of-life care - home to an In-Patient Unit, Day Services, Outreach, and Bereavement Support. Over the years, our teams have expanded, our buildings have evolved, and our research has reached national and international recognition. Yet our purpose remains the same: to make every moment matter for every person who walks through our doors.

Our community: the heart of our story

The hospice exists because of its community. Every donation, every event, every hour volunteered has helped us to keep our promise of care, compassion and kindness. From our first fundraising events to today’s thriving network of shops and supporters, the people of Dudley and its surrounding areas have made our work possible. Together, we’ve built more than a hospice - we’ve built a legacy of love and care that continues to touch lives every day.
