Volunteer for us

Give the gift of time

Not every gift is financial. Sometimes, the most precious thing you can give is your time. At The Mary Stevens Hospice, our volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do. From offering a warm welcome on reception, to supporting our nurses on the ward, to sorting donations in our shops, volunteers make an extraordinary difference every single day.

Volunteers Week

Why volunteer?

When you volunteer with us, you become part of something bigger - a community united by care, compassion, and kindness. You’ll help us save hundreds of thousands of pounds each year in staff costs, meaning more money can go directly into patient care. You’ll meet new people, learn new skills, and discover how rewarding it feels to know that your time has changed someone’s life for the better.

A role for everyone

Our volunteer team is vast and varied. Whether it’s helping in one of our shops, supporting fundraising events, offering companionship to patients, or assisting in our In-Patient Unit, there’s a place for you here. Every hour you give is a gift. Together, our volunteers ensure that the hospice can continue to be there for every person who needs us.

The power of volunteering

Last year, our incredible volunteers donated more than 11,500 hours of their time, saving the hospice over £130,000 - time and value that directly supported free, specialist care for people living with life-limiting illnesses. Each act of kindness, no matter how small, becomes part of a much bigger story - one of community, compassion and care.

Frequently asked questions about volunteering

If you’re thinking about becoming a volunteer, you might have a few questions. Here are some of the most common things people ask before joining our team.

Who can volunteer at The Mary Stevens Hospice?

Almost anyone aged 16 or over can volunteer with us. Whether you’re a student, retired, working, or looking to give back in your spare time, there’s a role to suit your lifestyle and skills. Some patient-facing roles may require specific experience or age restrictions, but we’ll guide you through what’s available.

What kind of roles are available?

There are many ways to get involved; from helping in one of our shops, welcoming visitors at reception, or assisting at fundraising events, to offering companionship to patients or supporting our In-Patient Unit. We’ll work with you to find the right opportunity that matches your interests and availability.

How much time do I need to give?

That’s entirely up to you! Some volunteers give a few hours a week, while others support us during one-off events. We’re grateful for every moment given - and we’ll always do our best to be flexible around your commitments.

Do I need previous experience to volunteer?

Not at all, what matters most is your compassion, reliability and willingness to help. We provide training, guidance, and ongoing support so you feel confident in your role.
