Playing together, caring together
Playing The Mary Stevens Hospice Lottery is a simple, lighthearted way to support your local hospice, and every entry helps ensure our care is here for the future.
Play the weekly LotteryHemajith, a keen gardener, was running errands after dropping his children at college. With a free moment before heading to Kingswinford to pick up some plants, he spotted a pound coin lying on the ground. Rather than pocket it, he decided to put it towards something worthwhile.
Just along the road stood The Mary Stevens Hospice charity shop, a place that already meant something to his family. His wife works as a cancer consultant, so the couple have long understood, first-hand, the difference palliative care can make to patients and their loved ones. Inside the shop, volunteer Liam Peck told him about the hospice's weekly lottery. On a whim, Hemajith used his found pound to buy a ticket.
"I didn't think anything of it afterwards," he admitted.
So when his number came up as the winner, it took him completely by surprise. "It took me a moment to realise it was mine, I couldn't believe I'd won £1,000!"
Hemajith described the moment as a "win-win" - a small act of generosity that came back around, while supporting a charity close to his heart. He later returned to the shop with sweet treats for the volunteers, as a thank you for the difference they make every day.
He now plans to put his winnings towards home and garden improvements - a fitting reward for a man who found his luck while doing what he loves!
