In-Patient Unit

Specialist and personalised hospice care in Dudley and surrounding areas

The In-Patient Unit at The Mary Stevens Hospice provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care in a calm and supportive setting - a space where comfort is prioritised, dignity is protected, and compassion guides everything we do.

Care that’s about living, not just treatment

At the heart of our hospice is a promise: to live as fully and comfortably as possible.

Some people come to us for short stays to help manage symptoms, others for crisis support, and some for end-of-life care. Whatever the reason, our team takes time to understand what matters most to you - from the meals you enjoy and the routines that make you feel settled, to the spiritual or cultural practices that bring you peace.

Do you have a question about the IPU?

If you’re unsure about anything, from how to make a referral to what to expect during a stay, we’re here to help you.

We want each stay to reflect what matters most to you...

In-Patient Unit services and facilities

Every detail of our In-Patient Unit has been thoughtfully designed to combine specialist palliative and end-of-life care with the comforts that make life feel personal. Our facilities not only support your medical needs, but also help you and the people close to you spend meaningful time together.

Single rooms, all with en-suite facilities

Each of our ten bedrooms is designed to offer privacy, peace and comfort. All rooms are bright, welcoming and include en-suite facilities, so you have the dignity and independence of your own space.

Freshly prepared meals every day, with food available for visitors too

Our catering team prepares nutritious, home-cooked meals tailored to your preferences, dietary needs and cultural requirements. Meals are also available for visitors, and we can cater for special events such as birthdays, anniversaries or meaningful occasions.

A calm and inclusive peace room

Our Peace Room is a quiet, inclusive space open to people of all faiths and none. It can be used for prayer, reflection, meditation or simply a moment of calm. Many visitors share that time here helps them feel soothed and supported.

Complementary therapies for patients and visitors

Our specialist therapists offer therapies such as aromatherapy, reiki, reflexology, relaxation and massage. These treatments are free of charge and help to ease stress, promote wellbeing and bring comfort to both patients and visitors.

Facilities for overnight stays, so those who mean the most can remain close

We know how important it is to remain connected. That’s why we provide overnight accommodation - from recliner chairs and a dedicated flat, to cuddle beds that allow people to lie together. These options help ensure no one has to be apart when they’d prefer to be together.

Dedicated spaces for reflection and celebration of life’s important moments

Alongside clinical care, we create space for life’s special moments. Whether it’s marking a milestone, spending quiet time in the gardens, or simply enjoying a favourite meal together, our facilities are designed to support meaningful experiences as well as care.

Our team is by your side, every step of the way

Behind every moment of care is a team of people who are here not only for their professional expertise, but for their compassion, warmth and dedication. Our In-Patient Unit team includes doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, social workers and a spiritual care lead. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in palliative and end-of-life care.

But what often matters most is how they care - taking the time to listen, to offer reassurance, and to treat every person with kindness and respect. From managing symptoms to arranging meaningful moments like a birthday tea or a blessing, our team works together to make your stay as comfortable and personal as possible.
