Hyron and his family had been planning a trip to Italy, but an admission to The Mary Stevens Hospice meant those plans had to change. At our hospice, we know that creating moments, memories and experiences is important so instead of letting that dream fade away, our team worked together to bring Italy to Hyron and his family.
Led by our Spiritual Care Lead, Ruth Radley, the team transformed the hospice into a beautiful Italian escape. From backdrops and road signs to candlelit tables, roses and personalised ‘MSH Airlines’ boarding passes, every detail was carefully chosen to make the evening extra-special.
Ruth Radley, Spiritual Care Lead said: “We love being able to do these things for our patients and families when the opportunity arises. Time together is so precious we will always do what we can to enable special moments and memories to be created.”
When Hyron's wife and family entered the room, they were overwhelmed by the effort that had gone into creating the experience.
The family said: "We couldn't believe what the hospice had done for us. It was such a lovely evening."
The evening centred on creating lasting memories together. The family enjoyed an authentic Italian meal kindly provided by local restaurant Odore, followed by gelato, while a local pianist performed Italian music throughout the evening. While the trip to Italy couldn't happen, Hyron and his family were able to spend a special evening together, creating memories that will always be treasured.

"I just can’t put into words the care and support I received from the hospice nurses, they allowed me to be ‘Mel’s Daughter’ again, as they provided the care, allowing me to spend my time just loving him. We were a family again."
