Creative Wellbeing

Where imagination promotes wellbeing

At The Mary Stevens Hospice, our Creative Wellbeing services give patients, carers, staff, volunteers and our community the chance to pause, create, and explore their creativity.

Supporting wellbeing through creativity

A paintbrush, a piece of clay, a line of poetry - small acts of creativity can hold great meaning. They can help process emotions, spark joy, and reconnect us with parts of ourselves that illness, grief, or pressure may have quietened.

At The Mary Stevens Hospice, our Creative Wellbeing sessions offer an inclusive, supportive space for everyone, whatever your level of confidence. Whether held in our Day Services Unit, with our network of carers and volunteers, or as part of our community initiatives, the programme brings people together to express themselves, connect, and share meaningful experiences.

Creative spaces

Our Creative Wellbeing programme offers a safe and inclusive space for everyone to explore arts-based activities in both clinical and community settings. Funded by the National Lottery, these sessions focus not on creating perfect works of art, but on engaging with creativity as a way to connect - with ourselves and with others.

Moments of expression in our Day Services Unit

Day Service Unit patients can take part in weekly sessions, exploring a variety of arts-based methods in a supportive setting. The sessions encourage self-expression, build confidence, and often bring laughter and warmth alongside creativity.

Time to breathe for staff and volunteers

Each month, staff and volunteers are invited to Creative Wellbeing sessions that offer time to step away, reflect, and reconnect through creativity. This space is especially valuable in palliative care and reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting wellbeing across our team.

Creativity shared with our community

Beyond our hospice walls, we collaborate with community groups and organisations to make creative opportunities accessible to all. These workshops invite honest conversations about death, dying, and grief, and raise awareness of hospice care.

Frequently asked questions

We understand attending one of our Creative Wellbeing sessions may feel new or unfamiliar. Here are answers to our most common questions.

Still have a question?

Do I need to be ‘good at art’ to take part?

Not at all, our sessions are designed for everyone, regardless of ability or experience. What matters most is the process, not the end result.

Who can attend these sessions?

Creative Wellbeing sessions are open to patients using our services, carers, staff, volunteers and members of the local community through workshops. Each group has sessions designed to meet their needs.

How can creativity help with illness, stress or grief?

Creativity offers a way of expressing emotions that may be hard to put into words. It can ease stress, build confidence, encourage relaxation, and help people feel connected to themselves and others.

Is there a cost to join?

All community workshops run at the hospice are free of charge. When we run public workshops in the wider community, we do charge a small fee to attend.
