Bereavement support

Grief touches people in many different ways

For some, it rises and falls like waves; for others, it is a quiet presence that stays. At The Mary Stevens Hospice, we understand that there is no single way to grieve. Our Bereavement Support Service is open to anyone in Dudley and the surrounding areas, whether or not you have used our hospice before. What matters is that you have the support, understanding and space you need, before and after a loss.

Support shaped around your experience of grief

Loss and grief can bring different feelings and emotions for everyone. Our team offers gentle, compassionate guidance to help you through. Some people may want a listening ear, others a place for quiet reflection, and some the reassurance of being with others who understand. That’s why we provide different ways of finding support, so you can choose what feels right for you and those close to you.

Bereavement Support services.

However grief affects you, our Bereavement support service is here with options that honour your needs, your pace, and your way of remembering.

When you need someone to truly listen

From our Supportive Listening Service to more in-depth counselling, we provide one-to-one support for those who need a safe, confidential place to talk and be heard.

Supporting the Dudley community with Bereavement Hubs

Our Bereavement Hubs and Information Points bring help into the community, offering resources and connection in familiar, accessible places. We also run a dedicated helpline for schools, supporting teachers and pupils when loss affects a community.

Children, young people and families

We provide tailored one-to-one support at the hospice and group sessions in community settings, as well as creative programmes like our Forest School.

Creating space to remember and reflect

Grief often needs its own expression. Our Wind Phone and Whispers on the Wind provide private ways to share thoughts and feelings. We also host remembrance events, including our annual Picnic to Remember and Light up a Life, giving people the chance to honour lives and memories together.

Bereavement Hub support sessions

Our Bereavement Hub offers a series of six sessions, designed to help people understand their grief and find ways to live with it. Each session blends practical guidance with space for reflection, offering comfort alongside useful tools for coping.

The sessions cover:

  • Understanding grief: Exploring the many ways loss can affect us.
  • Your story: Sharing and reflecting on personal experiences.
  • Finding support: Learning about the help available around you.
  • Self-care: Discovering ways to look after your wellbeing.
  • Creativity and expression: Using creative approaches to process feelings.
  • Rest and reflection: Relaxation techniques and visualisation to bring calm.

These sessions are open to anyone in our community who is grieving, whether or not you have previously accessed hospice services. Click the button below for more details.

Frequently asked questions

Reaching out for support after a loss can feel daunting. To help, we’ve answered some of the questions people often ask - and our team is always here if you’d like to talk.

Still have a question?

Who can access bereavement support?

Our service is free and available to adults living in Dudley and surrounding areas, even if you haven’t used other hospice services. Children and young people can also access bereavement support, provided they have previously accessed the hospice’s services.

Do I need a referral?

No, you can contact us directly, or be referred by a healthcare professional.

How long after a bereavement can I ask for support?

There is no time limit. Some people reach out before a loss, some straight away, and others months or even years later. For some services, such as Supportive Listening or Counselling, we suggest a 2-month period after your loss. We are here whenever you need us.

Is support confidential?

Yes, everything you share is treated with respect and confidentiality.
