Claire qualified as a nurse in 1995 and joined The Mary Stevens Hospice in 2004 as a Senior Staff Nurse. Since then, she has held several key positions, including Practice Development Nurse, Ward Manager, Head of Nursing, and Matron. Claire completed a BSc (Hons) in Palliative Care in 2011 and became an Non-Medical Prescriber in 2013. She was appointed Matron and Registered Manager in May 2020 and is also a Director of Trading and Lottery subsidiary companies. Claire continues to work clinically as a Non-Medical Prescriber, retaining her passion for the core mission of the hospice.
Simon joined The Mary Stevens Hospice in 2003 as Business Manager, bringing with him nearly 17 years of experience in accounting practice and industry. He later gained extensive experience in the charity sector, holding Financial Controller roles with Sandwell Training Association and Providence Group Services. A former accounting lecturer at local FE colleges, Simon led the growth of the Hospice Trading Company for over a decade before integrating and leading the finance function across the organisation. He holds an MSc in Responsible Leadership and Practice from Lancaster University.
Gemma has worked at The Mary Stevens Hospice since 2013 and was appointed Director of Strategy, Innovation and Communications in April 2025. She is the co-founder and lead of No Barriers Here - an internationally recognised, award-winning programme challenging inequity in palliative care.
Having undertaken several MSc-level research modules and leadership programmes, Gemma’s professional focus is on strategic development, equity in palliative care, co-production, education and research.
Amanda joined The Mary Stevens Hospice in 2011, following a career with the local authority’s Registration Service, where she specialised in marriage legislation and ceremony coordination. Having first volunteered at the Hospice’s Kinver shop, she progressed to become Shop Manager, then Lottery Officer, Community and Events Fundraiser, and later Head of Fundraising and Lottery. Amanda has developed some of the Hospice’s most successful fundraising initiatives, including The Black Country Monopoly board game, The Mary Stevens Hospice Pantomimes, and the annual Stourbridge FC v West Midlands XI charity football match.
Outside of work, Amanda enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and walking her two Labradors, Edie and Molly, with her husband, Craig.
Jo brings over 25 years of experience in Human Resources, gained across a range of sectors. She earned a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management in 2008 and has built a career grounded in both expertise and practical application. Jo joined The Mary Stevens Hospice in 2022 and was appointed HR Director in 2025.
Before joining The Mary Stevens Hospice in 2016, Alex spent a decade working in business development across the engineering and social housing sectors. Over the past nine years, he has secured more than £2.5 million in grant funding and significantly grown the Hospice’s legacy fundraising income. Alex was appointed Director of Strategic Funding in April 2025.
Alex says:

Julie qualified as a pharmacist in 1997 and joined The Mary Stevens Hospice in 2009 as the Specialist Palliative Care Pharmacist. Her expertise spans medicines management, governance, education and training, electronic prescribing and clinical leadership. Julie completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Care in 2012 and became a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber in 2013. Now serving as Director of Care, Julie’s focus is clear - ensuring the Hospice consistently delivers the highest standards of care for patients and their loved ones, every time.
James joined The Mary Stevens Hospice team as a Fundraiser in 2020, bringing with him a strong background in relationship-building and fast-paced working environments from his previous career as an estate agent. Although new to events fundraising at the time, he quickly embraced the challenge and has since played a key role in developing some of the hospice’s most successful fundraising events, always striving to go the extra mile for supporters.
This became deeply personal for James when his Grandpa spent his final days in the hospice’s care. Experiencing the exceptional support provided to his family strengthened his passion and commitment to the cause. Now Deputy Head of Fundraising and an advisory member of the Senior Leadership Team, James is focused on developing sustainable, engaging fundraising initiatives that support the hospice’s future.
Gail has been part of the hospice’s Trading Company since its very beginning, first volunteering in the original Victoria Passage shop in 1992. She went on to become Store Manager of the second shop in Brierley Hill in 1993, before briefly leaving to work at House of Fraser and returning to help open the hospice’s third shop in Cradley Heath.
Over the years, Gail has played a pivotal role in the growth of the Trading Company. In 2010, she became Manager of the Stourbridge High Street store and Area Manager, overseeing a growing portfolio of shops as the hospice expanded.
Now based at the Distribution Centre offices, Gail is immensely proud to have been involved in the opening of every hospice shop. She credits the success of the Trading Company to the dedication and hard work of its managers and volunteers, whom she continues to support.
