Hospice Volunteers

Volunteers at the Mary Stevens Hospice

The hospice is supported by a dedicated team of 180 volunteers who play a vital role in our success, and have done so since opening in 1991. Each individual gives us their time, skills and experience, and of course their commitment, and all out of the goodness of their hearts.

Our volunteers help in all areas of the hospice; some are directly involved with the patients care both in day unit and the in-patient unit. Others help on reception, manning the phones and greeting visitors. Some use their own transport to collect patients from their homes and bring them to day care and home again at the end of the day. We have gardeners who work all year round to keep our grounds looking first class. Assistants help in the kitchen preparing food; and we have volunteer Chaplains who take services at the hospice.

We have fully qualified Complementary Therapists who offer our patients a wide range of therapies including aromatherapy, reflexology, massage, reiki, Indian head massage.

Volunteers assist the patients with crafts and activities, Hagley art group visit day hospice and offer advice and encouragement to some very talented patients. Members of the local community come to entertain our patients in all sorts of ways, singing, playing instruments, even belly dancing.

The hospice provides the highest standard of care to our patients and their families, and the volunteers contribute largely to that, nothing is too much trouble.

To enable funds to be raised for patient care we also have volunteers who help the Fundraising Team in a variety of roles, from counting income in collecting tins, assisting at events, being a member of the Summer Fete Committee and supporting with administrative duties.
